Did you know that in 2012, CNN Money, which comprises CNN Small Business, Economy, and Personal Finance, received the 18th Society of American Business Editors and Writers award for excellence in its breaking news coverage? CNN Business reporters are widely touted as some of the best in the industry, covering many difficult topics since the Great Recession began in 2008. Because of its excellence and accolades, CNN.com is the 81st most popular website in the world according to Alexa.
Where the company excels is in its CNN Small Business section. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures the national unemployment rate rose from approximately five percent in January of 2008 to nearly eight percent in January of 2013. With the decrease in employment rates, many Americans turned to old styles of employment such as freelancing. Others, in droves, turned to entrepreneurship to make a living in a world that was not offering them a job. Huffington Post reported in its story “Global Entrepreneurship Is On the Rise” that in January 2012 there were 400 million entrepreneurs around the world. Later that year, however, CNN business news reported that there was a decline in entrepreneurs and speculated it could a good omen. They noted, in “A drop in new entrepreneurs might be a good sign” that this drop might be due to the increase in businesses hiring again.
Regardless of the drop, many CNN business articles since the Great Recession began have helped to steer entrepreneurs and small businesses through the troubled waters of the downturn. CNN Small Business frequently runs articles discussing up and coming companies, public relations disasters, failures, and successes. It has, no doubt, been a vital resource for many business owners looking to avoid similar fates.
All of this is not to say CNN, as a whole, has been without scandal and detractors with extremely public disasters when discussing women’s health issues and other controversial topics. Further the company has been called overly biased and leftward leaning. However, there clearly cannot be much to either of these issues as the company still holds the 21st most popular site in the entire United States. This far outranks competitors like Fox News who only rank at 44th in the US and 169th worldwide according to Alexa. For CNN Small Business it seems relevance will not become an issue for a long time to come.
