If I told you that you often encounter nylon zip ties and similar hardware, would you believe me? The truth is, we encounter many different tools and fixtures on a daily basis without fully realizing our interactions with them. Nylon zip ties, as an example, are used in packaging for children’s toys, and also at construction sites to fix temporary fencing elements in place. Here is a quick list of four useful fixtures you encounter all the time, that might surprise you.
1. Concealed Hinges
Ever wonder why some doors have really obvious, visible hinges, while the doors to your cupboards seem to hide them? This is due to hidden, or concealed, hinges. A hinge is an object that connects two different objects and allows them to rotate. A concealed hinge is made up of a hinge cup, arm, and mounting plate.
2. Desk Grommet
Do you often have a lot of wires for computers, phones, lights and more on your desk? These wires often run through a hole in the back of your desk. Desk grommets are plugs that fit in the hole and allow you to route your cables and wires in a more orderly way. They also prevent cables from getting frayed by the otherwise sharp edge of the hole.
3. Nut Covers
Do you need to protect your nuts from squirrels? Just kidding. A nut cover is actually a cover placed over metal nuts in order to prevent corrosion from occurring. They are typically made from rubber, plastic or stainless steel. One way you might encounter this on a daily basis is when it comes to vehicle wheels, where they are commonly used to protect nuts from water and dirt damage.
4. Swivel Casters
Ever wonder what mechanism allows your desk chair to move in any direction? This is called a swivel caster. A swivel caster is comprised of a wheel mounted to a fork, with a swiveling joint located above the fork that allowed the wheel to roll in multiple directions rather than only forward and backward. You might also encounter these when you use grocery carts.
